In 2014 the Badger UW Volleyball team finished out their season at the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, where they faced Penn State in the Elite Eight. The Badgers captured game one but fell to their Big 10 rival after dropping the next three sets in a classic volleyball thriller. Each point was contested, each volley a battle of skill and wills between two teams adamant about making their mark as the premier volleyball program in the conference. Penn State was defending their national title while Wisconsin held the reigning Big Ten championship crown.
Though this Badger squad was aiming for a repeat appearance in the Final Four, their journey to the Elite Eight is something to truly celebrate. In route to capturing a Big Ten title and facing off with Penn State, the team finished with a 31-3 record, dominating opponents by winning 96 games to only 11 losses. Seniors Courtney Thomas and Taylor Morey were named second team All-Americans. Sophomore Lauren Carlini finished as a first team All-American and nominee for the Honda Volleyball Sport Award.
Coach Kelly Sheffield sat down with On Wisconsin for an extensive interview just 36 hours after finishing up the season. Here the coach tells us why this squad was so special and what the future holds for Wisconsin volleyball.
